Always expect the unexpected when you are a day out from
a trip of a life time! The unexpected is exactly what happened. Bleary eyed I
awoke to Shane saying Kevin Sheedy messaged at midnight to say he would like to
meet the MOAM team at 9am! A quick call was made to Sue and Ken asking them to
jump into their car and drive up from Mandurah! Packing a caravan with clothes
or cleaning the house before going away for a month were soon pushed aside.
Shane and I have known Kevin for some time but for Brad,
Sue and Ken this was a first. A memorable first! As everyone would be aware
Kevin is a legend of the AFL, hugely respected in the football fraternity but
above all he is a human being who was genuinely interested and compassionate
about the MOAM cause. Good humour was shared, especially when Brad ordered a
cup of tea instead of a latte or flat
white! Words of wisdom and inspirational stories from Kevin's experience were
told. Two hours passed quickly but the impact he had on us all, especially Brad
will be everlasting.
Reality kicked in and it was back to Mandurah for Sue and
Ken to clean the house, watch the Dockers and begin their adventure in the
Castle! For Brad is was home to hop on his bike for a final ride to Mandurah
followed by a return to Safety Bay later in the afternoon. I'm sure on the ride
he said to Mitch, "How about that mate, meeting up with the great
Sheeds!"
Our day didn't end there as Brad was interviewed by Brett
Sprigg on ABC Grandstand at 5:15. The MOAM team gathered in Shane's garage to
listen to the interview. Our sincere gratitude to Brett for having done his
research about A Mitch Gillam Project and in particular MOAM. Brad was great in
the interview and I'm sure listeners of the show were inspired by his story and
will now join him on the ride.
After all that excitement a debriefing over a pizza was
enjoyed recounting the amazing day had by all. It was time to attempt to
capture some sleep as Ken's Castle and Shane's Shack were on the move!
